Church of England Weddings
Where
Everyone living in England lives in a parish and therefore belongs to a parish church. Normally this would be the church you would contact first. However, from October 1st 2008 you can also marry in a church that has special significance for you as well as your parish church. An example might be the parish where one of you grew up in or where a parent or both one of you lives.
I/We do not go to church but would still like a church wedding is that possible?
Yes you can however normally the parish priest may ask you to attend preparation meetings or church services before you get married.
Can I still get married in church if I/We have not been baptised?
Yes you can however normally the parish priest may ask you to attend preparation meetings or church services before you get married.
How long can it take
Some priests insist that a couple attend pre-marriage classes before the wedding and the classes may run over several months. Otherwise it depends on whether the marriage is by publication of banns or by special licence.
Before the wedding ceremony the couple must arrange to have their banns (a public announcement of a forthcoming marriage) read out on three Sundays during the three months before the wedding. They must be read out in the parishes of both people. If the banns cannot be read out for any reason, a special licence can be issued by the bishop of the diocese.
